Go Girls Promotes Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds
On MorningFile today, Rachel sat down with Kayla Lockey, Go Girls Coordinator from Big Brothers Big Sisters Hamilton. Kayla was an absolute pleasure to talk to as she explained a little bit about what exactly this program is doing at elementary schools across Hamilton and also in other cities across Canada! Go Girls is a group mentoring program that promotes healthy conversations among young girls from ages 12-14 that focus on topics like physical activity, balanced eating and self-esteem. Bringing together students from all different social circles in school and allowing them to meet people they may not have normally hung out with is a great way to form new friendships and allow them a space to come out of their shell and truly be themselves. The program sounds like a complete blast for the kids where they run activities that cover crucial topics!
Big Brothers Big Sisters also runs a program for young boys called Game On! With more of a physical component, this program also aims to advocating positive conversations and allowing kids to ask the tough questions that they may be too embarrassed to ask their parents. Both of these group mentoring programs are encouraging safe space for kids to feel accepted and make new friends. Keep updated on how you can get involved with the program on their website. They are always accepting volunteers and there are hundreds of children in Hamilton waiting for a mentor like you! If you missed today’s interview, you can catch the full chat below!
Don't forget to get involved with other events happening at Big Brothers Big Sisters like their upcoming Over the Edge walk on June 1st!
