Fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis: MSU Shinerama

Last week, Lauren Liu, part-time manager for MSU Shinerama, stopped by the station to chat about her service.

At the McMaster level, Shinerama is a McMaster Student Union (MSU) service, operating to provide programming and fundraise for the Shinerama organization. Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser, dedicated to supporting Cystic Fibrosis Canada. The organization works with 45 Canadian universities and over 35 000 student volunteers to help with the cause. Volunteers across the country do all kinds of events, from car washes to sporting events. Since 1964, Shinerama has raised almost $27 million dollars for CF research and care.

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease in Canada that affects children. The disease is caused by a malfunction of the CFTR protein in the body, which is responsible for the production of mucus, sweat and digestive fluids. As a result, mucus and fluids become much thicker. It can cause many problems in the lungs and digestive systems, as mucus buildup can clog up airways and ducts. Cystic Fibrosis Canada states it is estimated one in every 3600 children born in Canada has cystic fibrosis. Over 4200 Canadian children, adolescents and adults with CF attend specialized CF Clinics.

The Hamilton community has been heavily involved with the Shinerama campaign. McMaster’s campaign has existed since 1965 and has offered a number of different fundraising events such as Shine Day and car washes.
