What's New?: Music Library Updates
CFMU has finally taken a step towards the oft-discussed “return to normal.” Our first weekly live program returned to the airwaves (the Freewheelin’ Folk Show on Saturday mornings). Until the Top 5 returns in video form – hopefully next month – we’ll keep you in the loop with this blog. Here’s three titles of note that landed in the CFMU music office inbox!
The Dirty Nil – "Doom Boy"
The latest local release to peak our interest is the new single from The Dirty Nil, who’ve been working on a new album. “Doom Boy” is partially an ode to metal (as evidenced by several bars of extra thrash) but is entirely “classic Nil.” The new album, provocatively titled Fuck Art, comes out later this year. By the way, if you pick up the limited edition vinyl for “Doom Boy” you get a free peach-scented air freshener, which kinda goes along with the song’s Dodge Caravan references…

Orville Peck – Show Pony EP
Orville Peck has held our attention since the release of his debut album Pony in 2019. Part of it is that the fringe-masked queer indie-country hero keeps surprising, first with a cover of the Bronski Beat classic “Smalltown Boy,” then by releasing a duet with the biggest Canadian country legend of our era, Shania Twain. Show Pony features that track “Legends Never Die” as well as the previously released tracks “No Glory in the West” and “Summertime.”

Jaga Jazzist – Pyramid
Stepping sideways into something a little different…Norwegian experimental jazz group Jaga Jazzist have been active since their debut in 1996. Their cinematic approach, and use of elements of hip-hop and other genres, brought them into the Ninja Tune family at the peak of the label’s success. Uncut says “The result is a deeply eclectic yet remarkably cohesive record that unfurls in pleasingly unpredictable ways.”
