What's New?: Music Library Updates (Part 5)
Welcome back to another edition of the new music round-up. Keep in mind, these aren’t necessarily “new releases” as in “records that came out on Friday.” These are new recordings coming through the CFMU music department – so the timing may be off. Sometimes a record may actually be three weeks old, other times it might not be available to the public yet.
Blah blah blah…here’s the tunes!
MY FLYING MACHINE – RUNNING OUT OF THINGS TO LOSE
Hamilton area songwriter Brandon P. General has been working for years under a variety of monikers. This newest from My Flying Machine falls “somewhere between the basement lo-fi of M.Ward and the lush production of The Beach Boys.” This is General’s first full-length under any moniker, and it’s a worthy debut filled with sunny, jangly (yet, somehow, simultaneously melancholy) pop and introspective lyrics about loss, depression and anxiety. Available digitally with a physical release planned for future days.

LIDO PIMIENTA – MISS COLOMBIA
Toronto-based Lido Pimienta finally got her due when her last album, La Papessa, won the Polaris Music Prize in 2017. People wondered (as they always do with hitherto-unknown award winners) if she could do it again. Well, no, she couldn’t do it again. She got even better instead. Largely self-produced (and entirely self-written, arranged and recorded) Miss Colombia sounds even more authentic than its predecessor. By that I don’t mean “authentic Colombian music,” though that’s true too; no, it sounds like Pimienta challenged herself to reach even deeper into herself - and succeeded. Pitchfork calls it “a full-throated declaration of mastery, all the more impressive for Pimienta’s insistence on prioritizing Afro-Colombian rhythms and instruments in an overwhelmingly white musical landscape.”

KOOL KEITH – SAKS 5th AVE
Kool Keith. He of the Ultramagnetic MCs, making hip-hop since the 1980s. He of critically acclaimed hip-hop supergroups such as Dr Octagon. He, renowned for being…a little less than normal (to put it mildly). Yep, the man born Keith Thornton is one weird dude. So what’s he doing now? Oh, just releasing a whole barrage of albums in a row, including this one, Saks 5th Ave. The record’s sub-No Limit artwork doesn’t suggest what you’ll hear – Keith’s eccentric flow over oddly enjoyable trap beats. It doesn’t sound like the work of a 56-year-old, that’s for sure.
