From the Vaults E13: Radiohead
They had one hit to date... Creep. Ignorantly and innocently I even ask them if they’re going to play it at their show that night.
I was (and still am) a super fan. I’ve seen them live 10+ times...
.... So I was pretty nervous to meet them.
We were at the Park Hyatt in Yorkville. I remember we met up in the lobby, found a quiet corner and did the interview there.
I was using a portable reel-to-reel tape recorder and wasn’t super technically proficient. I remember being worried the whole time that it wasn’t recording, though was too scared to stop and double check.... thankfully it worked!
Listening back now, I can hear myself oscillating between budding radio journalist and superfan. Colin asks me a clarifying question and I just go a long with it. “Did you ask me what I studied or where I studied? “ he asks me to clarify.... I stumble, um... both??? Either?? Whatever you want to say is fine with me! Lol.
Thank you Radiohead.....for not crushing the adoration of a kid fanboy largely pretending to be a journalist in order to meet you.
They were in such great moods. So very giving with their answers, incredibly gentle with my amateur approach and simply took over the conversation. I sort of just laugh and stumble along with them.
I have to admit, it’s a little painful to listen to. Me just fanboying along with two musical heroes. Each time they ask me a clarifying question I can hear myself panic to keep the conversation going.
Such a snapshot in time.
Radiohead referencing Suede and Elastica as bigger and higher profile acts....The Bends had just come out....Pablo Honey was big but nothing like what was to come with OK Computer and beyond. They had one hit to date... Creep. Ignorantly and innocently I even ask them if they’re going to play it at their show that night.
Thank you CFMU... for giving me a platform to speak to one of my favourite artists of all time. I loved my time at the station.
Thank you CFMU... for giving me a platform to speak to one of my favourite artists of all time. I loved my time at the station. My brit-pop themed show, “Welcome to the Cheap Seats”, and my introduction to the music business as student Music Director.
