Independent media, a hallmark of activism: The Maggies 2018
Nominations have opened up on their website here. They close Friday, October 26th, 2018
Independent media is critical to providing a platform and voice for those who may not have the resources to broadcast their voices. It provides an opportunity to hear stories free from bias that is sometimes seen in private and corporate media.
A champion of independent media was Maggie Hughes, who produced and hosted a weekly radio show, the Other Side, here at CFMU. Maggie, an incredibly well known Hamilton journalist, was an advocate for sustainability, peace, social justice, human rights. She used her platform as a means to bring to light some of these critical issues.
To honor Maggie’s long dedication to journalistic integrity and activism, the HIMA or “The Maggies” was created.
On November 4th 2012, after a long struggle against Multiple Sclerosis, Maggie passed away. To honor Maggie’s long dedication to journalistic integrity and activism, the HIMA or “The Maggies” was created.
“The Maggies” is a media award looking to recognize all the great independent media outlets and individuals here in Hamilton.
